United States visa overview
The United States is a top destination for leisure, business and family visits. Visitors typically apply for a B1/B2 visa, which requires an online DS-160 form, a visa fee payment, a biometrics step and an in-person interview. Preparation and consistency across your documents are key.
Best time to visit: Spring and autumn are popular for city travel, while summers suit national parks and road trips.
Visa types available
- Tourist (B2)
- Business (B1)
- Student (F1)
Tips for a strong United States application
- Complete the DS-160 carefully, and make sure every detail matches your passport.
- Book your interview slot early, since waiting times vary by city.
- Carry proof of employment, finances and family ties to support your answers.
- Practise a mock interview so you can answer calmly and truthfully.
Documents and requirements specific to United States
- The DS-160 confirmation page with barcode and your appointment confirmation are mandatory at the gate.
- There is no fixed supporting-document list, so bring what proves your ties: employment letter, recent tax returns, property or family documents.
- If a relative in the US is hosting you, carry proof of their status and a short invitation, but expect the officer to focus on your own ties.
- Old passports with US or other visas help demonstrate your travel history.
Requirements vary by embassy and visa category. We confirm the current list for your profile before you apply.
Where and how to apply for a United States visa
US visitor visas are handled by the US Embassy in New Delhi and the consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad. After you complete the DS-160 and pay the fee, you choose a biometrics (fingerprint and photo) slot and an interview slot, usually in the same city or a nearby one.
Some renewals and repeat applicants may qualify for an interview waiver, but eligibility rules change, so confirm the current criteria before assuming you can skip the interview.
Processing timeline to plan around
- Interview slot waiting times vary widely by city and season, from a few weeks to several months.
- After an approval, passports usually come back by courier within a few working days.
- Administrative processing after a 221(g) slip can add weeks or longer.
- Do not book non-refundable tickets until the visa is in your passport.
Common mistakes with United States applications
- Entering inconsistent job, income or travel details on the DS-160.
- Memorised answers that do not match what you wrote on the form.
- A trip plan that is vague about dates, cities and who pays.
- Using unofficial portals that charge extra for the same appointment.
